Quick and Easy Ways to Summer-Proof Your Car
Summer's here - and if you're feeling the heat, just imagine how your car feels! With the temperatures inside the engine bay getting as high as 150C, and the outside air not providing much relief, your car's cooling and air conditioning systems have to work extra hard to keep the engine and the driver within their safe operating temperatures.
Cooling
The radiator is one of the most important components of your car’s cooling system, and frequently, the first point of failure. Make sure it is operating at its full capacity by following these simple steps:
• Flush and replace the coolant
• Check for leaks – fix if necessary
• Check for corrosion – add anti-corrosion agent
• Check for damage – fix if necessary
• Check hoses for blockages – replace if necessary
Do not use water as a coolant!
Automotive coolants have a higher boiling point than water and can operate at high temperatures. Water can also corrode the engine block from the inside out.
Is it safe for plastics?
Many modern radiators have plastic components, so make sure you choose cleaning and anti-corrosion additives that are safe to use with plastic, steel and aluminium parts.

• Check the refrigerant level – regas if necessary
