Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) performs a number of critical roles. It acts like a hydraulic fluid to enable shifting, protecting gears and bearings from wear, managing heat and providing frictional properties to ensure smooth, consistent shifting. Over time, the fluid deteriorates, especially if the transmission gets extremely hot from dragging or dragging.
Heat causes transmission fluid to oxidize or break down. Fluids that break down create sludge that clogs narrow passages and interferes with shifting. Worn fluid may also not provide the proper frictional properties for your transmission. Eventually you will notice that your vehicle is shifting hard or erratically.
